How to Store Prepared Frozen Meals Safely

If you’re a lover of frozen meals, then you may have wondered how long they can be stored after not eating them for a week or a month.

At Kouks Kitchen, we know you wouldn’t want to consume anything that could potentially risk your health. We also understand that frozen meals, though delicious and convenient, can cause uncertainty when it comes to the expiration date and how long they can be stored safely.

How Long Can Prepared Frozen Meals Last?

This entirely depends on the type of food and how well it has been stored. Most prepared frozen meals can last between two to six months, especially when stored and sealed properly. Your freezer should be -18°C, as food stored at this temperature can usually be kept for a long period without spoiling. If your freezer cannot maintain this temperature or if you know that you do not keep your freezer sealed properly and tend to open the door very often, then it’s best to not store the food for too long, for the sake of maintaining its quality.

In general, freezing is one of the safest ways to store food and, as such, it is rare for food to spoil when stored in the freezer. Freezing pauses the movement of molecules, rendering microbes inactive. So, the recommended storage time is focused on how long the quality of the food is best maintained rather than when the food will spoil.

Bear in mind that the longer the food is stored, the lower its quality will become and you may observe a dullness in colour. Don’t be concerned if you see ice crystals forming on your frozen meals, as this happens when water molecules freeze, which is completely normal. It will not affect the quality or taste of the meal at all and is not a sign of spoilt food.

Here is a guideline for storing frozen food:

  • Cured or processed meat – 1 to 2 months
  • Casseroles – 2 to 3 months
  • Uncooked ground meat – 3 to 4 months
  • Fish – 3 to 6 months
  • Soup and stew - 3 to 6 months
  • Cooked meat and poultry – 4 months
  • Uncooked meat – 4 months to a year
  • Fruit and vegetables – 8 months to a year
  • Uncooked poultry – a year

Frozen food tends to last quite long, so you won’t have to worry about wasting food and money regarding concerns about food safety. So, there’s no need to resort to unhealthy takeaways if you lack the time to cook. Still, re-freezing a meal after defrosting is not recommended. To truly enjoy one of our delicious meals, we suggest defrosting it in your fridge for no longer than 48 hours, upon which you can simply heat, eat and indulge in flavourful prepared frozen meals.
